Define Your Goals

What are your business goals for 2014? This is the most important aspect of social media: your strategy and goals must align with your business goals. In the world of social media it’s vital that your brand and online presence represent your true, authentic passion. Today’s consumers are savvy and can spot a phony a mile away. And, let’s face it, it’s a lot easier to be true to yourself and your vision than to make up something you think will make a sale. In our fast-paced environment, things change quickly and customers change right along with them. Social media is a great way to keep tabs on them throughout the year so that you are always providing up-to-date service and products.

Plan your Content

Content—what do you want to share with your customers and prospects? Start with brainstorming. What do you know the most about or specialize in? Look to see what your competition is up to. At this stage of generating ideas, don’t reject anything.

I advise using an editorial calendar in order to take advantage of important dates. It’s also a stress reliever to have your content all planned in advance. But, it’s best to plan for only a few months ahead. That way it’s easier to make adjustments in real-time. Choose your Channels

You will deliver different types of content to different audiences depending on the platforms you choose. For newbies, I recommend using only 2 or 3 for a start. Once you get going, you’ll gather valuable experience that can be used to add more channels down the road. Facebook is generally the most well-known, so it can be a good starter channel. Depending, of course, on your strategy and goals, Pinterest or Google + may also be good choices for beginners. When you’re first diving into social media, you’ll want to track and test different metrics closely to see what’s working and react to this information in a timely manner.
